hello all whats new?
I've had a week of meeting people new and old its been nice. Met up with a few old uni mates this week really good to catch up with them and see what they're up to. Tuesday I was at the Old Blue Last in Shoreditch for the graduates VS creatives night. It was cool event, saw an ace band Keston Cobblers Club which are MINT, so check them out http://www.myspace.com/keston_cobblers_club. About four members of the band can play the accordion!
Chatted to some cool people and some weird ones. This one lass totally blew our minds with her 'advertising is evil' rant, it was absolutely mental! Several minutes of uninterrupted hatred (along with several Bill Hicks quotes) towards advertising and the people who work in the industry. I'm not really sure why she went to an advertising event?!
Any way crazy girl aside I meet a new copywriter, fred, he seems pretty cool, we're working on a few new ideas at the mo so hopefully something will come out of that.
I'll leave you with a video from Keston Cobblers Club for there song 'You Go'

Outside the box
Now normally I hate it when I hear "think outside the box!" and for some reason people always say that to me when I tell them I want to work in advertising! Any way is seems appropriate for this post.
Thursday I went to a stand up comedy night at my local theatre (Sevenoaks Playhouse) which was brilliant. They were great acts, everyone was really funny and the host Maff Brown was top. The comedians included Ed Stone, Lucy Porter, Addy Van Der Borgh and Rayond & Mr Timpkins Revue. Check out the website they do gigs around the south east of England I'd throughly recommend it - www.outsidetheboxcomedy.co.uk
I also got some feedback on my book from the lovely Emma at Poke. She had some nice things to say but one of the things that interested me most was a term she used, the 'richness of a concept'. In other words how much can you do with one concept and where can you take the idea.
"I would recommend you that before going for a concept you tested how rich it can be. How much you can take from it. Can it be a theme that sparks several ideas under it? Or there's not much to do with it rather than ads?
If the first question is YES, it's a concept worth to play around. If the second question is YES, leave it and think of something else."
Think thats better advice than just "think outside the box"!

shelves
As I mentioned in my previous post I was helping a friend move house the weekend just gone but I also found time to put up some shelves at home (ok I had some help but I still feel manly having done some D.I.Y!).
I've finally got all the crap of my floor and on the shelves but this got me thinking about how you can kinda get to know someone through there stuff. At a recent interview I was asked "What do you sky plus"? I'm guessing I was asked this so the guys could try and gauge what I'm like through the tv I watch. Sooo here's what's on my shelves.

Bottom shelf you'll see A LOT of comedy DVD's. Extras and the office (I'm a big gervais fan as well as The World of Karl Pilkington on the shelf above). Next to that lot, old note books and papers that must litter ever creatives desk area, so many ideas and scribbles in that mess. And me on an elephant in thailand (the frames made of elephant poo!)
Middle shelf, books on advertising and design, love that 'Advertising is Dead, Long Live Advertising' book, pretty much saved my diss and so many great ideas in there. Moving onto the awards section! My degree certificate and the trophy next to that, my five-a-side winners of league two trophy! The cup is full coins, screws and little thing you can't throw away but know you'll never use. I reckon everyones got something like this in there house, thats full of crap.
Finally general art supplies on the top shelf, you never know when the mood to scamp may strike.
So they are the shelves of truth, hope you like them.

Payback.
ello there how ya doing?
This weekend I was helping a friend move house, just two of us, moving a whole flats worth of stuff into his new 4th floor apartment (yes 4 floors we had to go up and no lift)! Any way I'm not complaining he needed a hand and I was happy to help. Where are you going with this slightly odd and possibly boring story I hear you cry. Well I was rewarded for my efforts with beer and pizza and this leads neatly onto my next thing. Whilst catching up with the Superbowl ads from last nights game I came across this which could not be more relevant to my weekend experience.
I really like the idea behind the ad, marketing beer as a pay back method to friends who have done favours for you. Perfect for the target audience, top idea. I'm yet to crack alcohol advertising but this has given me a few ideas.

spot of new work
hellooo how ya'll doing?
Got a spot of new work to post up. Its for tom tom sat navs, basically going with the idea that the 3 wise men could've done with of them, when they were journeying to meet JC. The executions are for press and radio, but it could easily go to poster, 48 sheet etc...
Any feed back would be brill, its in the early stages so would be good to hear some thoughts.
Tar.

A week of goodness.
Last week was pretty sweet.
I met up with copywriter called Tom, we had a good old chin wag over a pint and looked over each others books. He had some neat ideas in there and we're meeting again to work on a few briefs.
A second slice of goodness was interview offer at Kiss and Magic fm. This is pretty awesome as its for a creative copywriting job which looks brilliant, so going in for that tomorrow! (Wish me luck).
I visited Cheltenham this weekend and met up with a load of uni mates that I haven't seen for a while. Was a great weekend catching up and seeing what everyones up to. Think its important to stay in contact with people, its a real shame when you loose contact and I think making the effort is really worth it. (There could be a good telecoms ad in that somewhere).
Booked my ticket for Industry vs Graduates (http://www.shellsuitzombie.co.uk/vs.html). Looks like it should be a good night so looking forward to that.
One last thing I beat my pb on the course/route I run around my neighbourhood if any one cares about that! I was pleased with it.
Lets hope I can have another good week. Some new work coming soon so stay posted.
